Copyediting Proofreading Line Editing

Usually the first stage of the editing process, copyediting comprises:

  • Mechanical elements (spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and more)
  • Language (grammar, usage, syntax)
  • Content (inconsistencies, discrepancies, structural issues, correctness)

There are three levels of copyediting: light, medium, and heavy. If you think your project needs a copyedit, please contact me and we can work together to determine what level we will choose to make your work shine!

The final stage of editing, proofreading is the last polish of a manuscript, and focuses on correcting:

  • Spelling and punctuation
  • Indisputable errors in grammar or usage
  • Formatting
  • Discrepancies in numbers, captions, indexes, etc.

Proofreading is different from copyediting in that it only addresses essential edits and does not aim to correct facts or suggest rewrites for tone or style. Think of proofreading as the “last chance” to catch egregious errors before submitting your piece.

Also referred to as “stylistic” editing, line editing involves a sentence-by-sentence analysis that focuses on:

  • Voice and tone
  • Improving pacing
  • Tightening and clarifying language
  • Finding overused or redundant words
  • Catching cliches

A line edit seeks to make your writing clearer, more engaging, and enjoyable for your audience. Instead of the mechanical focus of copyediting, it addresses your writing at the creative level.

My rates depend on the type and length of the project. For manuscripts 1,700 words or longer, I typically charge $.012 per word. For shorter manuscripts or business documents, I charge per hour and the rate depends on the type of content. Please contact me and tell me about your project so we can determine a fair rate.
